Building a Practical Bug Out Bag with Military Surplus Gear

Most bug out bags online are either overpriced tactical bundles or cheap kits filled with low-quality gear.
A better approach is using military surplus — equipment designed for real field use, often at a lower cost than retail tactical brands.
Focus on these basics:
reliable pack (comfortable load-bearing, not brand-focused)
water and storage system
basic first aid kit
simple tools (knife, multitool, cordage)
lighting (headlamp or flashlight)
Avoid overpacking. If you can’t carry it comfortably for 1–2 hours, it’s too heavy.
Military surplus works well because it prioritizes durability over marketing, even if it shows minor wear.
The goal is not a “perfect kit” — it’s a usable, adaptable setup you understand.
Surplus-based preparedness gear added regularly.
